America's Cup Up Close

The weather was great on Sunday. I've joined the crowd to watch the America's Cup race in Marina. It is actually a cool spectacle. The sail boats come very close to the shore. So close you can see the crews moving around on the boat. One boat nearly capsize in front of us and the crowd gasped. I wonder if the crew can hear it.

Then I moved on the another event nearby, the Sunday Streets in Chinatown. To Hang Hang, a closed off, empty street in the Financial District must be a spectacle. He just gone wild and ran around in the middle of the street. Two great events in one day. What a lovely city this is!

Remember this moment - with Hang Hang in the Plaza

Remember this evening in the Japantown Plaza.

We have just finished dinner and the twilight is still bright. We spend a little time outside to let Hang Hang run free in the cobble stone plaza. I follow closely behind to catch him in case he should trip by the uneven ground. The fountain is dry. "Mau Mau, Mau Mau" he said. There is no water he told me.

Hang Hang in Japantown

Hang Hang is vocalizing a lot after the Hong Kong trip. Some talk we understand. Others are only for his own enjoyment. He pick up some Cantonese pop song and happily sings out loud. 錢,錢,錢,錢, la-la-la! He trills his tongue, trying his best to follow Sam Hui's popular song. Then he runs toward a restaurant and look at its showcase. "This is a cat (model)", "and this is a bowl of noodles" I explained.

This afternoon I pick up Tatchee from his summer school. Unlike last week when we go home by bus, our car is finally ready for pick up after one week in an auto shop. We take the F-line tram from school. We easily find two seats and I let him sit by the window. He is playing with the window latch and he ask me what is its function. "It allows you to open the window, but the window is already fully opened". We get off at the Castro Plaza. It is a great sunny afternoon. The street is lively but uncrowded. One guy is taking full advantage of the sunshine and appear to sit bare bottomed. We walk back to the auto shop two blocks away. It is nice to be out on the street instead of hole up inside the office all day.

These are moments of life. It happens once and never come back. So I remember it now, like I want to remember that one afternoon two years ago.

Walking Distance Yardstick

It is not so straight forward to make a distance estimation when using online map. The tiny scale is hardly useful. So I have made some measurement base on some San Francisco landmark for use as a yardstick. The measurement is the approximate distance from the front entrance of the Ferry Building.

  • 100m - The Art and Craft Market by Justin Herman Square
  • 200m - The length of the Ferry building
  • 500m - Embarcadero BART at Beale St
  • 1 km - Montgomery BART at 2nd St
  • 3.2 km - Van Ness

Another rule of thumb is a brisk walk of 1 km takes about 10 minutes. So to walk to Van Ness, it should take a little more than 30 minutes. This number I have validated in my walk early this week.
