Jazz at de Young

Concert at Osher Sculpture Garden

We went to a free jazz concert at de Young museum's Osher Sculpture Garden. It was a great way to spend an lazy sunday afternoon, eating at the outdoor cafeteria in the beautiful garden while enjoying live music.

I looked at metal roof overhang above the garden and a well attended concert under. I have an observation. Why are there so many people crowded in this small garden when there are acres of open space within the Golden Gate park? In particular the western part of the park are so much more secluded compare to here. Now this garden is no shabby space for sure. But it is only a tiny area out of the entire park. We think people want a park for its open space, for a large lawn to enjoy by themselves. Why are so many people coalesce here instead? It is like what usually happen in a party. Rather than spread out evenly in a spacious house, people often crowded in the same room where everyone else seems to be in.

Of course there are a lot to do here. The sculpture garden is a wonderful attraction by itself. It is also a great space because it borders the architecturally interesting museum building and afford a good view of it. Most people are really coming for de Young but has discovered this delightful extension after their visit. Food and music also draw people of course. The result is great atmosphere. Everyone want to gather here more than the open lawn elsewhere.
